only to find that the pins are too wide and unlike veroboard. Compatible with 0.3 up to 0.6 wide ICs up to 40-pins. 1" spacing and kinda sorta fit in the wide IC socket foot print (the pins are wider so it will take a little effort to get the buggers into the board) and don't do stupid stuff like me :) Check your circuit board footprints BEFORE sending it off to the fab house :P I got a surprise when I went to put my ZIF socket into my board. This is a high-quality, easy to use 40 pin ZIF socket that is 0.6 wide with gold-plated contacts. Zif sockets are used for preventing damage on the pins of the ICs like microcontrollers. The ICs own weight is sufficient to keep it in. 40 Pin Zif Socket is a 40 pin DIP package IC compatible socket. DIP 40 Pin ZIF Socket (Green), Test & Burn-in Socket SKU: 3062 Part Number: DIP 40 Pin ZIF Socket (Green) Brand: - 2.99 Qty: Increase Decrease Add to Cart 2.69 2+ 2.39 3+ 1.99 4+ IC Test & Burn-in Socket, for DIP40 package Features High quality. It comes with a lever for locking and unlocking the IC to the base. Ideal for usage with ICs that need to be changed frequently. the pins will only open half way and can result in them not gripping onto the IC's legs)īut they are. 40 Pin ZIF IC Test Socket makes adding and removing ICs from circuit boards a simple task. Pro tip though, leave the socket in the OPEN position before soldering as the pins do get hot and if you leave it closed and melt the plastic then it will impact on the performance of the socket (i.e. Zero-Insetion-Force, ZIF, socket for testing and programming IC:s. You can do them the same pitch but from my experience I would strongly recommend soldering the SIL headers to the OUTSIDE of the socket and then using a rotory tool (such as a dremel) to trim the board back (remember to wear facemask and/or use dust extraction as fibreglass dust is nasty stuff you don't want having a pool party in your lungs.) Supercat's answer was the most usefull to me, but it is in a comment :( I have one of those black ZIFs too, I like it much better than my '3M clone', but it costed maybe 10 times as much.Kinda, you will need to solder them onto a veroboard (or an IC prototyping sheet if you can get one that is big enough but not too big), and then use SIL (single inline) headers. Mouser offers inventory, pricing, & datasheets for Zero Insertion Force (ZIF) Sockets 40 Position IC & Component Sockets. It is a bit of a compromise now, I would never use such large holes for a normal DIP socket, but is still fits OK. Zero Insertion Force (ZIF) Sockets 40 Position IC & Component Sockets are available at Mouser Electronics. The holes are now so large that no trace will fit between two pins, but the autorouter did not mind :) I now made the holes larger, I'll see whether this works out OK (the file was sent to the PCB house today). The two rows are definitely not at the standard distance from each other, yet close enough to the standard distance that two holes is out of the question, the holes would overlap which AFAIK is frowned upon by boardhouses. The ZIFs I have is marked 3M (although it is more likely a clone). I had not realised that different brands of ZIF sockets can be very different in pin spacing. Alternatively, if you have tried this and found it to be impractical I'd like to hear that too. I am looking for an eagle footprint that can accept both a standard 40 pin DIP socket or a ZIF socket.
